And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while. But february made me shiver With every paper I’d deliver. Bad news on the doorstep; I couldn’t take one more step. I can’t remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride, But something touched me deep inside The day the music died. So bye-bye, miss american pie. Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye Singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die. “this’ll be the day that I die.” Did you write the book of love, And do you have faith in God above, If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock ‘n roll, Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you’re in love with him `cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym. You both kicked off your shoes. Man, I dig those rhythm and blues. I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck, But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died. I started singin’, “bye-bye, miss american pie.” Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye And singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die. “this’ll be the day that I die.” Now for ten years we’ve been on our …

@jubjub2012 very well said
its glad to see that at least some1 has some intelligence in this world and understands that music doesnt always revolve around the crap music that is today
gofig, this song was made in the 60’s or something, MJ wasn’t even famous then.
The whole first three verses are about the day that Buddy Holly (a musical legend) died. Feb 3, 1959. “feb made me shiver, with every paper i delivered”. Don McLean was a paper boy and thats how he figured out that his idol died.
when he sings ‘the day the music died’, he means the day Buddy Holly died. every time. not MJ in sight.
the day the music died? the day Michael Jackson died.
@TheGrayWarden Nope
do YOU have faith in god above?
In my math class, We ALL LOVE THIS VIDEO!! It’s FTW.
Plus, Mr.Thompson, It’s nate =D
@hoboboxerjoe
You’re right IMO. We all have “gods” and “devils”…with or without religion.
I wish we could all just be KIND to each other and value Human Life.
Let’s start with great music like this!!
who is the queen?
Mick Jagger is the devil on stage. Bob Dylan is the jester in James Deans coat. The ‘rolling stone’ line before that is referring to Dylan’s song ‘Like A Rolling Stone’.
For the last time…LENIN READ A BOOK OF MARX.
hehcant seem to find a guy who isnt a coward
@baller46254 “Mick Jagger is obviously the Devil.” Well OBVIOUSLY. That makes SO MUCH SENSE…
That said, I like your particular intprepretation of the song. What I absolutely hate is people going on about “faith” and faith songs, blah blah blah. This is my opinion, obviously. But god and the devil are so subjective that its pretty clear why poets and songwriters use the terms in their work. I have as well, most if it is about how faith is destructive in it’s nature, though. Which is quite obvious when you look at the state of most theocracies.
@baller46254
Only 36? Lol.
I have thought about it, since art is subjective and I wasn’t alive during this time I looked at it the way I looked at it. I can see why manyp eople who believe in god, or know the pop culture from back then would take it the way you have. But even if te author himself said it was about X it doesn’t mean we have to take it that way. That’s why it’s art. If you truly think the only way to appreciate/interpret the song is how you explained it then you are missing the point of music.
Helter Skelter is Charles Manson
Mick Jagger is obviously the Devil
Karl Marx
John Lennon read the book of marx
The girl who sang the blues is Janis Joplin
The beatles are the quartet
The King is obviously Elvis Presley
The Marching Band refers to The beatles song ” Sgt Peppers lonely hearts club band”
My dad explained this to me since im only 13 even though he is only 36
@EPCHEERBABE There are several lines that specifically talk about faith – care to explain?
@EPCHEERBABE Actually the jester is thought to be Bob Dylan, because he openly mocked the government. Mick jagger is thought to be satan in the song because of the song, “sympathy for the devil.”
this is about February 3rd 1959 the day buddy holly, Ritchie Valens, and The big Bopper died in a plane crash. THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED as it is commonly refered to. Its about music. The jester is Mick Jagger is the jester in the coat borrowed from james dean. Think about it people. it has nothing to do with good and evil or god. its about music and music legends
I also think of this song as a message about man’s obsession with good and evil, black and white. And how it all becomes a grey area, and in the end how none of it really matters “when the music died” which would translate for me, our ability to fight and stand up for what we believe, our freedom.
Even as an atheist I really like this song. I interpret the stuff about god and devil as talking about the inner struggles of this country and man itself. Great song!
What a coincidence! It’s about ME and how perfect I AM. Amazng
@lsdarcy You are a douche… LQTM
